I would suggest looking into Registry pattern, it might be a good alternative to Singleton. With Registry you are able to control instances of classes in the upper application level.

Pat attacking Jill would have been justified since getting Jill out the road would have left Gary a single man again. It could have been the ultimate act by Pat who was desperate to get the man she wanted.
